We think these girls are beautiful, if a little bit
stand-offish compared to the Nigerians. Our plan is to breed these leggy
coquettes with our Nigerian Dwarf bucks to produce "mini-Nubians" - goats
with the friendly personality of the Nigerians and the good-looks,
increased milk output and ease of milking of the Nubians, all in a compact
package that requires less feed and is easy to handle. We hope to produce
the perfect small homestead animal in terms of temperament, milk
production, ease of care and good looks.
Ellie gave us our 1st Generation
Mini-Nubian polled doeling, Pippi, on
05/04/08!
After all the online studying, we
never came across any reference to a small problem that 1st Generation
Mini-Nubians may have. Pippi's little mouth can't open wide enough
to latch onto her mom's teats. We figure that about the time she's ready
to be weaned, mother and daughter will fit together quite nicely. This
probably won't be a problem in the subsequent generations, as the
animals get closer to the same size. So, if you are planning to breed
for Mini-Nubians, be prepared to bottle feed the kids.
